The Day’s Logistics + Welcome – 9:25 – 10:05am
Live Notes document »
The event will kick off with logistics, but also a rousing call to action from
Lee Ann Potter, Director of Educational Outreach at Library of Congress. By way of whetting your appetite, Lee Ann asks: Make observations, notice details, examine evidence, ask questions, consider perspective, recognize bias, construct knowledge, discover possibilities, applaud creativity, demonstrate appreciation, explore new worlds, solve problems, be amazed . . . is there anything teaching with primary sources can’t help us do?

Workshops – 10:15 – 11:15am
Five simultaneous workshops running 10:15 – 11:15am.

Workshop #1 – Primary Source/Archival Literacy Competencies Workshop
Live Notes document »
Archivists, librarians, and instructors at Purdue University and Indiana University have developed competencies that can be used as learning objectives for instruction sessions on primary source or archival literacy. In this workshop, participants will become familiar with these competencies and learn how to implement them into their teaching practices. Participants will work with real-world examples of archivist teaching scenarios to select and apply one or more competencies that can serve as learning objectives for instruction within their own institutions. Workshop leaders: Carey Beam (Indiana University), Dina Kellams (Indiana University), Sammie Morris (Purdue University)

Workshop #2 – “Is this thing on?” – A Workshop on Assessment
Live Notes document »
Structured assessment is not only a valuable tool for demonstrating the effectiveness of your instruction to administrators and other stakeholders. Assessment can also help you improve your teaching with primary sources over time and even help you better manage a classroom and engage with a group of students. In this workshop, participants will gain hands-on experience with a variety of assessment techniques and discuss the applicability of these techniques to different teaching scenarios and environments. Workshop leader: Rachel Grove Rohrbaugh (Elizabethtown College)

Workshop #3 – Thinking about Exhibits in Special Collections: Ideas and Advocacy
Live Notes document »
Jessica Lacher-Feldman, author of Exhibits in Archives and Special Collections Libraries (SAA, 2013) will offer a one hour introductory workshop on exhibits in Special Collections Libraries. The workshop will focus on generating ideas, exhibits as advocacy, and creative ways to build constituencies and collaboration. The workshop will also touch on the use of primary source material in exhibits, as well as tools and tips for making attractive, readable, and creative exhibit labels. Workshop leader: Jessica Lacher-Feldman (Louisiana State University)

Workshop #4 – Teaching with Visual Resources
Live Notes document »
Just as students need to achieve textual literacy to unlock the meaning of a written text, visual literacy (the ability to read, write and comprehend visual language) provides students with the tools to unlock the meaning of images and objects. This hands-on session will introduce visual literacy thinking routines developed by the Toledo Museum of Art and demonstrate how they can be used to help students employ close looking, descriptive vocabulary, and critical thinking to engage with primary source material. Colleagues from the Cleveland Public Library share examples of how the Biehle collection can be used to build the visual literacy skill set across a range of educational audiences. Workshop leaders: Pam Eyerdam, Rachel Senese, and Raymond Rozman (Cleveland Public Library), and Kate Blake (Toledo Museum of Art)

Workshop #5 – Quick Hits: Fun and Fast Icebreakers
Live Notes document »
In an ideal world classes would spend more than an hour inside our classrooms, but sometimes teaching librarians and archivists only have 20 minutes (or less!) to make a big impact. How do you maximize limited teaching time while still meeting educational goals? This hands-on workshop will feature three different icebreaker exercises designed to be done in 15 minutes and each focused on meeting specific educational outcomes. Workshop leaders: Lori Birrell (University of Rochester), Matt Herbison (Drexel University), and Mattie Taormina (Stanford University)
