WEBINAR: Teaching Immigration in American History with Primary Sources

This webinar will provide an entry point into teaching U.S. immigration history for K-12 educators using primary sources. Within the hour, participants learn where to find grade-appropriate primary source sets and how to use them in the classroom. Information will also be provided on how educators can build on their knowledge of primary sources for use in the K-12 classroom.

Sonia Pacheco is the social sciences and history librarian at the Claire T. Carney Library at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. She has worked as an information and heritage professional for eighteen years, and her knowledge is drawn from her current position as well as previous positions as the archivist for immigration based-archives, archivist and museum coordinator for a historical society, community development librarian and librarian archivist at public libraries. She received a Master’s degree in Information Studies (Archives focus) from the University of Toronto and a Master’s in History from the University of Massachusetts Boston. The research for her MA thesis focused on Portuguese emigration to the United States during the 1895-1911 period. Her professional interests include the relationship between archives and immigrant communities, capturing and preserving community memory, and teaching primary source literacy.
